i saw 3 films today, oh boy: hourly comic day

angelpen.substack.com

I understand that the point of the hourly comic day exercise is to document a little thing you did every hour you’re awake in as close to realtime as possible and render these chronicles in the sequential art tradition, then upload them to the web for all your friends and followers to react to, and I know that the fact that I kept semi-detailed notes on my phone every hour on February 1, 2021 only to draw those moments four days later undermines the challenge’s call for instantaneity, but I don’t care! It’s been over a year since I’ve produced anything resembling a comic, this is my way of playing the game. Let me play!

Thanks for reading. Hope you were able to decipher my scrawl. Maybe this exercise will serve as a warm-up to hunkering down on pending projects, or much like the groundhog, I’ll run in fright after bearing witness to my shadow and burrow back into my hole—and for a duration far beyond six more weeks of inactivity.

For your listening pleasure, consider this the footnote section for all of the music incorporated above.

I hope to write more about this at length in the future because Dot Allison’s “I Wanna Feel the Chill” was affecting in the bleary light of morning. Tim Buckley’s music has gotten me through some rough times, so that “Dream Letter” sample really impacted me; I recognized that vibraphone instantly! Intertextual emotional weight aside, Dot Allison’s isolated and layered vocals are heavenly and heartbreaking, the perfect summoning voice to breathe life into the new day.

Assuming Bono has heard this song, how do we think he feels about it? Chuffed? Annoyed? Jealous???

Bonus youtube comment anecdote:

Had a similar experience last month when I heard the opening spangle of “Purple Rain” while standing in the beauty supply aisle at Marukai Market the exact instant I looked out the window and watched the rain start to fall in the parking lot. Becoming highly aware of a familiar or over-played tune re-contextualized in a different space is a special experience; I appreciate this person’s compulsion to share their emotional response to what could otherwise be passed off as an unremarkable moment, cursorily listening to wallpaper one-hit wonders while waiting for fast food. Sometimes it takes divorcing a song from its subjective associated context, usually by means of a physical space, for you to truly hear it anew and appreciate its power.

At first, Aaron and I thought Keely Smith was genuinely fed up with Prima’s buffoonery, but I learned that it was just part of their stage act. Bamboozled!

I found it funny before I knew it was a routine, and I still find it funny because of her deadpan disgust. Proof that a withering stare cast at your beau is evergreen by comedic standards.

First off, first off. Phew! 💧

If you know the source of this atmospheric city sax instrumental at the start of this trailer, please let me know so that Aaron may rest easy at night. And before you try to suggest this track, think again! It’s merely sampling the audio straight from the trailer. Aaron secretly hopes that person gets a cease and desist from Universal because then the direct source material might be clearly identified, once and for all!

Here’s that Mr Twin Sister track.

And that Yukako Hayase track. Listen to So • Utso in full here.

Well, have you seen the 3D rendering of Ray Liotta in Bee Movie?
